The Client

MUMS is an innovative company transforming the way older adults find a safe and welcoming place to live. Inspired by the Airbnb model, they developed an application that allows users to explore, compare, and book care homes in a simple and transparent way. Their goal is to provide families with greater peace of mind and offer older adults a more human, dignified, and personalized experience by connecting them with spaces that truly match their needs and lifestyle.

The Challenge

Design a user-centered mobile app for MUMS, a platform inspired by Airbnb that helps older adults and their families find safe, trustworthy, and personalized care homes. Your challenge is to create an intuitive experience that simplifies the process of searching, comparing, and booking care homes while providing emotional reassurance and accessibility for users with varying levels of digital literacy. The design should include clear navigation, transparent information, trust-building elements, and essential features such as advanced filtering, detailed care-home profiles, easy comparison, visit scheduling, and secure communication.

The goal is to reflect MUMS’ mission of offering a dignified, humane, and seamless decision-making experience for families and older adults.

The Solution

To meet these goals, I designed and developed an adaptive care-home discovery experience and supporting interface that transformed how families and older adults search for safe living options—prioritizing clarity, empathy, and accessibility throughout the journey. Key elements of the solution included.

Personalized Care-Home Discovery Flow: I designed a guided exploration experience that adapts dynamically to the needs of older adults and their families. The system asks simple, empathetic questions about mobility, medical conditions, budget, lifestyle preferences, and geographic requirements. Each answer shapes the next steps, ensuring users only see relevant options without overwhelming them during a sensitive decision-making process.

Adaptive Recommendation Engine: To make the search feel human and truly supportive, the platform adjusts recommendations based on the user’s profile and priorities. If safety is the biggest concern, it highlights homes with stronger certifications. If social activities matter most, it prioritizes community-driven spaces. When information is missing or unclear, the system gently prompts the user or flags it for follow-up, ensuring accuracy while reducing friction.

Comprehensive Home Profile Builder: Once the system identifies suitable options, it compiles a structured overview for each care home — including amenities, medical support, accessibility features, staff details, pricing, certifications, and resident testimonials. This unified, standardized format helps families compare options quickly and confidently, reducing confusion during an emotionally heavy process.

Seamless Integration With Facility Workflows: The platform connects directly with care-home providers, allowing them to update availability, schedule visits, manage inquiries, and receive bookings in real time. Homes can review user profiles, prepare for visits in advance, and synchronize data with their internal management tools, reducing administrative load and improving coordination with families.

Empathetic, Accessible UI Design: A clean, friendly interface with large touch targets, simple language, and calm visual tones reinforces trust and emotional reassurance. Microinteractions and onboarding cues help guide users with different levels of digital familiarity. The overall design balances professionalism with warmth—ensuring older adults and their families feel supported, safe, and respected from the first interaction.

The Result

The project resulted in a seamless, empathetic care-home discovery experience that significantly reduced stress and confusion for older adults and their families. The adaptive intake flow helped users receive only relevant options, while the personalized recommendation engine ensured each match aligned with safety needs, lifestyle preferences, budget, and medical requirements.

The system generated standardized, easy-to-compare home profiles and integrated directly with care-home providers for real-time updates, visit scheduling, and smoother coordination. A warm, accessible UI reinforced trust and usability for all ages, ultimately improving decision-making speed, confidence, and overall satisfaction throughout the process.
